Over 300 people came out to support Chicago’s First Red Dress Party benefitting the Aids Foundation of Chicago and the Equality Project. This party began in the 1990’s when two gentlemen who were dating discovered they had both contracted HIV/AIDS. They swore to one another they would each wear red to their partner’s funeral. From this promise the concept of the Red Dress Party began. Currently, there are Red Dress parties all over the U.S. from Seattle, Washington to Chicago.

For all the fabulous events we attend in Chicago, few have been as colorful as the first annual Chicago Red Dress Party. Not so much in the spectrum of color, (since there was really only one holding the spotlight), but in the overall timbre of the event which was as festive, free and jovial as anything we’ve seen. The color of passion and strength, red is the optimal hue for an event created to raise awareness and support for the HIV/AIDS movement. And that night, the support came out in droves. Official Publicist Ryan Beshel and CRDP Board President Kyler Powell did an amazing job of getting the word out on the event and its official beneficiaries, AIDS Foundation of Chicago and Equality Project. In the final days leading up to the party, the words “red dress” were on everybody’s lips.

Chicago, IL — They came, they saw and they wore red. With the reviews now in for Chicago’s first-ever Red Dress Party, held Saturday, April 16 at 525 W. Monroe, the event was a clear success in its effort to continue an ever-expanding national tradition of raising awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and funds to counter its continued spread.

Chicago, IL — The history of the Red Dress Party reads like a piece of gay folklore: First held in Portland, Ore., in 2001, the unique HIV/AIDS fundraising party marked the fulfillment of a promise forged between two men who were dating at the time they both contracted HIV in the early 1990s. Their promise: When either of them passed away from the deadly virus, the other would attend his funeral wearing something a bit more daring than the standard-issue, mournful black: A red dress.

The “Red Hot Runway” fashion show was held at Columbia College recently as a Kick-Off for the upcoming “Chicago Red Dress Party” (April 16th). 13 designers participated and included Jiayin Zheng, Sadie Smith, Kelly Coll, Dana DuPree, Chloe Flora, Kristin Gillespie, Jacqueline Amezcua, Omotola Akinbiyi, Russell Yost, Katya Flores, Ruth Reyes, Amy Hilber and Johnny Hicks. The judges included Jerry Szec, founder of XOXO, designer Miriam Cecilia Carlson, Timeout’s Kevin Aeh and moi!

Chicago-Columbia College’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter is helping to eliminate HIV/AIDS one red dress at a time. Columbia College Chicago PRSSA is collaborating with the Chicago Red Dress Party to work towards their goal of increasing HIV/AIDS awareness within the Chicago community.
